Sentinel Surveillance

HIV sentinel surveillance means carrying out cross sectional study of HIV sero prevalence rates at regular interval among selected groups in the population known as "sentinel groups".

Annual HSS was started in 1998 and is being conducted regularly every year, with the objective

  1. To provide understanding of the spread of HIV infection.
  2. To determine geographical distribution and time trend of infection.
  3. To provide a basis for prioritization of resources.
  4. Validation of data from other sources.
  5. Evaluation of the national response to various programmes.

HIV Status Rajasthan

HIV sentinel surveillance 2010 was conducted at 28 ANC, 12 STD and 7 HRG sites. Precisely we can say that HIV prevalence among ANC attendees was stable to declining up to last round of HSS but during HSS 2010 we found rise in prevalence. As compare to previous HSS the prevalence is increased from 0.19% to 0.38%. The trend of HIV prevalence among FSW population was showing downtrend with 1.28%. Among STI attendee s the HIV prevalence is also reflecting stable to downtrend with 2.19%.

  • There were some districts where the HIV prevalence among general population was over 1%. Districts like Chittorgarh and Rajsamand had a prevalence of 1.25%. Few districts like Dholpur, Jaipur, Jalore, Kota is giving alarm with ANC prevalence of 0.75%. Out of 28 ANC sites total eight sites are showing more than 0.50% prevalence.
  • Category A district Ganganger FSW site is showing 0.42% positivity while Category B District Alwar is showing 4.40% positivity which is highest among all FSW sites. In fact Alwar site is continuously showing prevalence around 4-5% among FSW since last three HSS rounds.
  • Among STI attendees the HIV prevalence is also reflecting downtrend with 2.19% but there is Barmer and Udaipur which reflects more than 4% positivity.
